iFish Forever is the future of the sport fishing experience and sport fisheries management. Participating in iFish Forever is fun and easy:

  • Register as an iFish Forever user.
  • Take your phone with you when you fish.
  • Start a new trip once you're on the water; enter the waterbody that you're fishing, the species (if any) that you're targeting, and how long you plan to fish for.
  • Hit the 'Caught one' button each time that you catch a fish (do not log other people's fish). Then enter the species, length, and whether or not you kept the fish. Your phone will automatically record the date and time of your catch.
  • Click on 'Done trip' once you're off of the water. It is okay if you took short breaks during your trip, such as lunch or to move to another spot. If a break will be longer than about an hour, stop the first trip and start a new one.
  • Provide accurate info and only log during a trip (to avoid biasing the data).

By following these simple steps, you will contribute information that is essential to the responsible management of our fishery resources. You will also generate a catch log that you can use to gain insight into your fishing patterns (for example, best time of day or year to catch fish).

Yes. iFish Forever only records the information that you choose to provide. Data are stored is stripped of all identifying and personal information before being shared with a small research team at the University of Minnesota. Your information is never shared with conservation officers.

Raw data is stripped of all identifying and personal information before being shared with a small research team at the University of Minnesota. These researchers then summarize and analyze the data, and share summaries and results with agency partners.

We all love fishing, and without healthy waters the sport suffers. Tracking your catch log gives you insight into your fishing patterns. Sharing your catches allows you to provide accurate, timely and valuable information that will help to ensure that our fisheries are healthy far into the future.

Yes. Log all trips regardless of duration and all catches regardless of species or number. Trip data shows how much people are fishing and catch data reflects what is out there. If many anglers spend many days catching few or undesirable fish but this isn't reported, then no one will know that there is a problem. Likewise, underreporting during a hot bite can signal a problem where there isn't one.

No problem. iFish Forever requires accurate data but we understand that there are times when you start a trip late or your battery dies in the middle of a trip. If you are only able to record part of your trip then iFish Forever can still use your data provided that you accurately reported your catch during the period that you were recording.

Make sure that you log your entire trip next time. Do not enter trip data once a trip is over. The success of iFish Forever depends on accurate data. Research has shown that we do a poor job of remembering the details of a trip – even before the trip is over! This is especially true for large catches, long trips, and large groups.
